Description: Wireless Ad Hoc Network (WANET) is a special purpose auto-configured wireless network which serves either stationary or mobile nodes. The performance of WANET mainly depends on the routing protocol and congestion control mechanism to handle various traffic loads. The former determines the optimal path from the sender to the receiver node, while the latter minimizes the network overhead and manages resources efficiently. Conventional routing protocols such as Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) are quite inefficient due to the large routing information size, inappropriate routing information selection and its organization. Moreover, the protocols are not robust to the rapid network topology changes under a limited resource of nodes. The main objective of the research is to implement efficient routing and congestion control mechanism for WANET. To achieve this, firstly, a new routing protocol utilizing routing information for nodes within the network topology represented in Triangular Matrix Table (TMT) was adopted, thus the sharing information between nodes became efficient since the TMT needs only a small memory size. Secondly, a Topology Sense and Graph-based (TSG) protocol using Distributor-cast node selection mechanism when topology change been implemented. A message is sent to the neighbor's nodes in cooperation, and later will be forwarded to all nodes in the network. However, any nodes received one updating message only using TMT-Spanning Tree (TMT-ST) as reference. Thirdly, a lightweight congestion control and early avoidance congestion scheme based on the cross-layer between the Medium Access Control (MAC) and Network layers with the help of TMT were implemented to keep the overhead minimal. Every node sent the warning message to their neighbors based on the queue size in the Network layer, and the ACK/RTS failure counts in the MAC layer for optimal path selection. Both schemes were validated through the NS3 simulator under high traffic load and various node sizes. Then, the network performance was evaluated and compared with conventional protocols in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), throughput, delay time and message overhead. The results of the routing performance show enhancement of 58% and 60% in the PDR and throughput respectively against DSDV. Moreover, the message overhead and route discovery time reduced by 27% and 95% respectively as compared to DSDV. Finally, it can be concluded that the implemented efficient routing protocol and early detection congestion mechanism enhanced WANET network performance.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
